(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The attempted theft of a Ferrari from a Hinsdale car dealership will cost a Country Club Hills man 18 years in state prison.

A DuPage County judge handed down that sentence to 26-year-old RaJohn Stewart on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty in March to one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, prosecutors announced.

Authorities say Stewart and a group of juveniles were caught trying to steal a Ferrari convertible valued at $250,000 from Continental Motor Sports, 420 E. Ogden Ave. in May 2021. Officers had responded to burglar alarms at two dealerships when they came upon the idling high-end vehicle and a suspect trying to pry open a rear gate.

Stewart reportedly was captured after he and the suspects tried to flee the scene in another vehicle and then on foot. The cases against the juvenile co-defendants were handled by the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, prosecutors said. No further details were available.

“The quick apprehension, prosecution and significant sentence sends the message that in DuPage County, my office and law enforcement are one hundred percent committed to protecting our businesses from violent criminal activity such as that committed by Mr. Stewart and his co-defendants,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.
