NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Naperville City Council has voted in favor of creating a funding agreement to help restore yards following tornado damage from two-years ago.

The plan is to set aside $500,000 to cover yard damage not covered by insurance.

Two residents Kristy Kennedy and Kelly Dougherty are behind this volunteer effort. Kennedy was questioned by Mayor Steve Chirico during a city council meeting.

"I feel like right now we're being asked to pick a number, but we have no idea what the budget is or what the need is and so is that not kind of how it's normally done," he asked.

"I mean the reason we asked for up to $500,000 is we figured we would give back what we don't use," Kennedy said in response. "We just need to know that we have funding so that we can help residents."

Boundaries set by the group were questioned during the meeting.

Kennedy said they were set based on data from the National Weather Service concerning areas with the most damage. The mayor was the one no vote.

A vote on the amount still needs final approval.
