(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Leaders of several suburbs will make their case tonight why the federal government should reject the merger of two major freight railroads.

The Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern freight railroads are proposing a $31 billion merger and, if allowed to happen, would wind up sending more and longer freight trains through the Chicago area. Tonight, mayors, police and fire chiefs and village administrators from eight suburbs and DuPage County are promising to reveal never before heard evidence of why the proposed merger would have detrimental impacts on their communities, with eight to 14 more trains a day from Elgin to Bensenville.

They believe the extra freight trains that would roll through each day would lessen the quality of life for residents and businesses, not to mention causing more traffic delays, noise and problems for first responders during emergencies.

The officials will be responding to a draft environmental impact study by the Surface Transportation Board and how that study falls short.
