(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The non-profit Illinois Policy Institute said it’s combatting “gas tax propaganda” by placing signs on some gas pumps in the Chicago area Friday, the day the gas tax was to increase until the legislature approved a pause.
Adam Schuster, with the organization, said Governor Pritzker’s attempt to provide temporary relief for Illinois residents helps them until just after the election is safely over, meaning it’s “more gimmick than aid.”
Three years ago, he noted, the state tax was doubled, from 19-cents to 38-cents and it increases every July 1, at the rate of inflation.
The July increase this year is being moved to January 1 of next year, so there will be two hikes in 2023.
“While pain at the pump is felt nationwide, gas prices are always worse for Illinoisans,” Schuster said.
The average gas price in Illinois is 54-cents more per gallon than the national average.
