(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of residents of an apartment complex in Hyde Park are irate after a power outage that occurred on Friday, but is still keeping them out of their apartments.
Two towers at The Algonquin on Cornell Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets has signs placed on the entrances by the Department of Buildings that read: "Notice: off limits – do not enter."
"This has been a whole Christmas nightmare," one woman told CBS 2. "I have never in my 49 years experienced anything like this."
That resident is now in a hotel. The management company, Mac Properties, said there was a transformer failure. It's unclear when residents will get back in.
"At first, they said Monday, then they said Tuesday," one tenant said. "They told me Thursday - that we have the hotels until Thursday," another said.
The Department of Buildings said in a statement to WBBM that it's working with the management company and ComEd and will work with a contractor to expedite permits for the work that needs to be done.
"Life safety issues are always the top priority of the Department of Buildings(DOB)," DOB said. "Our thoughts are with those impacted and displaced by these power outages."
No timeframe for when it will be complete.
