CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Governor Pritzker calls the Trump administration's lawsuit against the City, County and State over immigration a ''distraction.''

Speaking on Chicago’s West Side, Pritzker said the Department of Justice (DOJ) gave no warning that it was suing over sanctuary rules to keep local police from participating in deportation raids. Of course, this will be fought in the courts.

“This administration is opaque, not transparent at all,” the governor said. “They apparently are going after things that are, again, distracting from the big question, right, which is: Are they taking away medicaid from all across the state of Illinois? A million people are going to lose medical care because of what they’re threatening to do.”

He scoffed at the DOJ saying sanctuary laws prevent immigration authorities from keeping the streets safe.

“When you pardon a bunch of January 6 perpetrators who attacked police, that’s not making anybody safer in the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said. “When you are firing thousands of FBI agents, when you’re shutting down the CIA, getting rid of people, frankly, people who are trying to keep our country safe, that’s not making anybody safer.

The governor suggests the Trump administration wants to freeze money for programs like Meals on Wheels for seniors.

“Unlike Donald Trump, we follow the law in Illinois,” Pritzker said.
