(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An online fundraiser is going strong for the partner of slain Chicago Police Officer Ella French, who was critically wounded in the Aug. 7 shooting that took her life.
Friends and family of Chicago Police Officer Carlos Yanez, Jr. paint a grim portrait but also express hope for him. Yanez was shot multiple times when a motorist allegedly opened fire on him and his partner during an Englewood traffic stop.
“During this incident, Carlos suffered from multiple gunshot wounds to the eye, brain, and shoulder all causing potentially lifelong disability,” a Go Fund Me page informs visitors.
One of the images posted on the page shows the officer in his hospital bed, seemingly unconscious. But the family on Wednesday released video that shows him alert and speaking from his hospital bed, thanking people for their support.
His online fundraising page, which had raised more than $187,000 as of Wednesday night, said the officer’s family hopes for as much of a recovery as is possible but adds “home modifications, accommodations, and transportation needs” may be needed.
French, Yanez’s partner, died after being taken to the hospital shortly after the shooting. Two Chicago brothers have been charged in the case, and a third man, from Hammond, Indiana, is accused of being the “straw purchaser” of the weapon used in the shooting.
French’s funeral is Thursday.
