(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The South Shore rail line is looking at a new route to the South Bend Airport that would involve acquiring homes.

The rail line president Mike Nolan said during a board meeting that a more direct route to the airport would eliminate 20 grade crossings and would shave 15 minutes off the trip.

Trains currently pass the airport and come in the back side. This was discussed five years ago and there was strong opposition from homeowners.

Nolan said now’s the time. Money is available. He said it’s unprecedented in his lifetime what could now be accomplished.

The South Shore is in the middle of a project adding an extra set of tracks with a goal of cutting the travel time between South Bend and Chicago to 90-minutes and 60 minutes between Chicago and Michigan City.

There will be public hearings on the matter.
