(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Criminal charges have been filed against a 17-year-old from Winthrop Harbor following a crash and police pursuit that occurred in late March.

A Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy witnessed part of the incident while on late night patrol on Sheridan Road in Beach Park.

Two cars were speeding out of a parking lot, and one of them — a Toyota Camry — had a man clinging to its hood. The Camry driver slammed on the bakes, which caused the man to fall to the pavement. The driver then ran the man over.

Both cars sped away. The deputy stayed with the man.

Officials said the cars had been in a minor crash, and the man on the hood tried to intervene.

The second driver followed the Camry and relayed its location to police for more than 30 miles. There was a pursuit, which ended when stop sticks were deployed.

The driver of the Camry is identified as a 17-year-old. They were charged with three felonies: leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, and aggravated fleeing to elude. All three charges are felonies.

Police said the 19-year-old man who was run over is undergoing extensive rehab.
