(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 17-year-old girl from Winthrop Harbor was taken into custody after a police chase early Monday morning — in which police alleged she had a man hanging onto the hood of her car.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy saw a 2004 Toyota Camry speed away from a business in Beach Park around 1:30 a.m. Police said a man on the hood was waving for help.

Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said another car raced up alongside the Camry, which then swerved and abruptly stopped.

“This caused the man who was on the hood of the vehicle to fall off the hood onto the roadway,” he said. “The driver of the Toyota then ran over the man.”

Covelli said while the deputy treated the man, his friend in the other car followed the Camry and called 911 with its location.

Deputies eventually stopped the car in Rosemont — 30 miles away from where the driver allegedly ran over the victim — using stop sticks to puncture its tires, Covelli said.

The sheriff’s office has recommended the driver face charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and criminal damage to property charges.

They believe the victim, a 19-year-old from Waukegan, tried to intervene in a minor crash in the parking lot of a social club and jumped on the hood to avoid being hit.

“Once he jumped on the hood of the Toyota, she then fled at the high rate of speed out of the parking lot, so he held on for his life as she continued down Sheridan Road and then several other side streets,” Covelli said.

Covelli said the man is hospitalized in critical condition.
