CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thousands of people are preparing to take a care-free bicycle ride on DuSable Lake Shore Drive where cars usually roll.
The 22nd annual Bike the Drive is this Sunday on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Amy Rynell of Active Transportation Alliance said there’s nothing so peaceful as being able to ride your bike on “The Drive” as the sun comes up, which is what people will get to do if they register for Sunday’s event. It starts at 6:30 a.m.
“We encourage people, if they’re not going to get up that early, to start riding by 8 a.m. just to be able to take advantage of the ride.”
Proceeds of the event and festival in Grant Park support the Active Transportation Alliance.
“We have a vision of a region that is abundant with walking, biking and public transit options, because it really makes our communities a lot healthier, more sustainable and more equitable,” Rynell said.
“We’re really looking to increase mobility choices for people so that we can increase all our quality of life by not always being in a car.”
She said that besides people from the Chicago area and throughout Illinois signing up for Sunday’s event, people from New Orleans, Los Angeles and other parts of the country have registered.
Although the main festival and starting point is downtown in Grant Park, Rynell said people can start their rides on DuSable Lake Shore Drive from four other locations-on the North Side at Bryn Mawr or Fullerton and on the South Side at Oakwood Blvd. or 57th Street.
The post-ride festival in Grant Park runs until 12:30 p.m. and includes live music, a pancake breakfast, beer and more.
You can still register at bikethedrive.org. The cost online before the day of the event is $74 for adult non-members of the Active Transportation Alliance and $18 for youth.
The event is sponsored by 5th Third Bank.
