Macon native, Dr. Lisa Herring has been selected by The Atlanta Board of Education to take over Atlanta Public Schools. The board announced Tuesday morning Herring was a finalist the district’s superintendent job. Dr. Herring comes from Birmingham City Schools District, where she has spent the last three years in the same role.
In a press release, APS Board Chairman Jason Esteves said the following:
“Over the last six months, the APS community played a significant role in crafting the leadership profile the Board used to identify potential candidates. We believe with her passion for serving students paired with her focus on equity and achievement for all, Dr. Herring is the best leader to take APS to a new level and close the achievement gap for so many of our students."
Herring holds a Doctorate in Education Administration from Georgia Southern University, an Educational Leadership Certificate from the University of Georgia, and an Educational Specialist and Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of South Carolina. She also previously worked for DeKalb County and Bibb County school districts.
The Atlanta Board of Education picked Dr. Herring to replace Dr. Meria Cartsarphen. This comes after the board announced in September that they would not be renewing Carstarphen’s contract after it expires this year on June 30.
The district says they will host a series of virtual meetings for parents and educators to meet Herring and ask questions. Questions and concerns may be submitted through the following channels:
