The City of Atlanta is being warned: settle with the family of Secoriea Turner or be sued for $16 million.

The 8 year girl was shot and killed on the night of July 4, 2020, near the site where Rayshard Brooks had been shot and killed by Atlanta Police on June 12th.

Police say Secoriea was riding in a vehicle that had come upon a road block when gunfire erupted and the girl was struck. She later died at the hospital.

Turner family attorney Mawuli Davis says the City of Atlanta “knew that University Avenue was being occupied and at times barricaded by armed men.”

The City is not commenting on the civil action.

The area, specifically the restaurant where Brooks was shot, had become a sort of memorial that had attracted thousands of protesters.

Brooks had fallen asleep in a Wendy’s drive-thru and, after about an hour of being questioned by police, grabbed an officer’s taser and attempted to run when they tried to arrest him for dui. APD officer Dillon Rolfe was fired and charged with murder in the death of Brooks.

After Brooks’ death, Attorney Davis says Atlanta had “allowed the city block to become lawless, violent, and dangerous, which lead directly to the death of Secoriea Turner.”
