Entrepreneur Mark Cuban took to Twitter on Thursday urging people to shift their donations away from the Georgia runoff races for Senate and “re-consider” by putting money toward charity organizations instead.
In a tweet, the outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks, said “For those considering donating to Reps or Dems in the Georgia Senate run-offs, can you please re-consider and donate that money to your local foodbank and organizations that can help those without food or shelter? Let’s put Americans in need above Politics.”
Many people responded including award-winning entertainer John Legend, who pointed out the obvious difference of policy. “I get that politics is annoying and contentious, but the bottom line is that the Senate flipping would be far more impactful than a food bank donation,” Legend said. “We need massive stimulus and aid to individuals and small businesses. Government needs to do this. Charity isn’t sufficient. That being said, I’ll be doing both.”
“Let's go all the way. Stop donating to charity, give those $ to politicians because 1 party will solve all of our problems Come on John. There is a point of diminishing returns on political ad spend, there are no diminished returns when it comes to feeding the hungry.”
Even U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) chimed in on the conversation to add his prospective after a string of replied from Cuban. “Dear Mark Cuban,” Lieu tweeted. “Thank you for supporting food banks. I also note that the federal government has a huge role in addressing food insecurity, from SNAP to agricultural policies to the Farm to Food Bank Program. It is unwise and misleading to act as if US Senators don’t matter.”
Georgia’s runoff election for two remaining seats in the U.S. Senate is on Jan. 5. Incumbent GOP Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler are facing Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock. The state’s registration deadline to vote is Dec. 7.
