A Two For One Bargain?

I'll let you decide.

What comes to mind when you hear things like:   0-60 in 3.6 seconds?   523 HP from a twin-turbo 4.4 liter V-8?   150 MPH+  top end?   Adaptive suspension control?   20" alloys with performance rubber?

That's not too far from Supercar stuff, right?

And then how about luxury car touches like leather dashboards…anthracite headliner…Harmon Kardon or Bowers and Wilkins audio…gesture controls…and all-around cocoon-like comfort for five?

Put in all of today's current tech…wrap it up in a slightly restyled well-tailored suit…mix it all together and what have ya' got?

A BMW M550i xDrive.

Let's face it.   Six figure Supercars are a hoot.   Attention-getting and an absolute blast to drive…once you "pretzel" yourself in.   And let's not even talk about extricating yourself from a semi-prone driving position that feels like it's two inches off the ground.   Weekend warriors?   Sure.   Daily drivers?   No.   At least not if you're over 50 or so.

And that's what makes BMW's new '21 M550i really shine.   It's got more power than most of us will ever use…and it's comfortable.   Real comfortable.   A daily driver?   Oh…I should be so lucky!

Now, don't get the M550i confused with the M5.   That's BMW's True "M Series" screamer.   600 HP…and a six-figure starting price.   But the 600 HP M5 will probably not have the day-to-day easy-to-live-with qualities that make the M550i such a charmer.

The M550i x-Drive starts in the mid $70'.   With a handful of packages and options, our window sticker came in at $93,735…a fair chunk of change, but it gave us a ride that I'm guessing most folks will have a hard time saying goodbye to after their three-year lease is up.

And if you like the taut lines of BMW's restyled 5-series, but don't need to accelerate to 60 in three-something-seconds, 5's actually start in the mid-$50's.   From there you can step up from the base 530's turbo four to the 540's $60+ thousand 335 HP twin turbo six…and you'll have more power and control than 99% of the cars on the road today.

But if you really want just about everything you can get in one handsome, nimble sedan…posh, poise and performance…see if BMW's M550ixDrive doesn't deliver for you, OK?
