Auto NSider | 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4XCrew Cab
I’m 62, But I’m All New!
With lineage going back to 1960, Nissan has been building trucks longer than many of you have been alive.
In fact, their last re-do of their Frontier goes back to 2005.
Why so long before they gave it a full-re-design?
They didn’t have to.
With a cult-like following, it’s not uncommon to see 10 – 15 year old Frontiers still working hard as they rack up 200 – 300,000 miles...sometimes more.
But with several of their competitors coming out with re-designs, Nissan looked around and finally said “OK…let’s do it!”
And “do it” they did. The ’22 Frontier is all-new…inside and out.
Let’s start with the engine. Every ’22 Frontier comes with a class-leading 3.8 liter, 310 HP V-6. Even the base high-$20’s King Cab comes standard with the 6. And you’ll get an up-to-date 9-speed auto with your six. The old 5-speed stick shift is history.
You can get your Frontier in the usual two configurations…the King Cab with rear jump seats and a bed just a hair over 6 feet…or as a full four-door Crew Cab with a roughly 5-foot bed. They’ll both be the same overall easily garage-able length. The Crew cab just trades the foot of bed length for an additional foot of leg room in the rear. Either way, you’ll have the largest interior in the class.
As you’d imagine, all the technological advances of the past 18 years are all either standard or available as a package.
We’re talking things like a 9” touch screen with standard Apple and Android connectivity, available Wi-Fi hotspots, wireless charging, intelligent around-view with moving object detection and an off-road mode, standard intelligent forward-collision warning and traffic sign recognition. Plus Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 is available on all models.
Because so many of today’s trucks are made to work all week and then play in the dirt and tow toys on the weekend, we got to test Nissan’s new PRO-4X 4X4 Crew Cab…a vehicle made specifically to do it all.
The PRO-X is a high $30’s trim that delivers most of the options just mentioned, plus voice recognition, door-to-door nav, 6-speaker Sirius radio, driver alertness warnings, trailer sway control, and special trim.
Then Nissan adds front and underbody skid plates, a sliding rear window, a dampened and locking tailgate, bed rail protectors, a cargo lamp, LED rear lamps, fender flairs and red tow hooks.
Add less than ten-thousand dollars worth of options and get premium paint, side step rails, bedliner, Nissan’s ”Utili-track” system with 4 adjustable tie-down cleats, a 120 V outlet in the bed and the rear console, heated seats, steering and outside mirrors, LED under-rail lighting, remote start, trailer hitch w. wiring, a Fender 10-speaker premium audio system, leather seating, sunroof, 17” alloys, a sport bar, and all of today’s warning alerts.
All in, our all-new Frontier PRO-4X Crew Cab had just about everything that we cold want for a window sticker under 47K.
For the moment, Nissan’s new Frontier is a class-leading mid-sized pickup….with all the latest tech, comfort and capability.
And as always, the competition has new models on the way. Let the games begin.
