According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is a leading cause of death for children. In the United States it is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 – 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5 – 14. Drowning death rates for Black people are 1.5 times higher than the rates for White people. Disparities are highest among Black children ages 5-9 (rates 2.6 times higher) and ages 10-14 (rates 3.6 times higher).

Black Mamas Matter Alliance
The United States (U.S.) has some of the worst rates of maternal and infant health outcomes among high-income nations, despite spending an estimated $111 billion per year on maternal, prenatal, and newborn care. Nationally, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. Black Mamas Matter is creating a world where Black Mamas have the rights, respect and resources to thrive before, during and after pregnancy.
