The Atlanta Braves activated reliever Chris Martin from the injured list on Wednesday.
Martin has been on the IL since April 4 due to shoulder inflammation.
In order to make room on the active roster, the team optioned RHP Bryse Wilson back to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Martin's return comes on the heels of an atrocious showing by the Braves' bullpen in the eighth-inning of a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
The Braves have now lost three of the 17 games in which they had a lead in the seventh inning. Last year, the were a perfect 23-0.
Chip Caray, the voice of the Atlanta Braves for Bally Sports, joined The Midday Show to discuss the bullpen situation.
"I don't know if it's confidence (that's been the problem) because I think, in fairness to those guys-- number one, they've done a great job because they've been so shorthanded because number two, they haven't had the bullpen put together the way they envisioned it pretty much from the opening day of the season."
A.J. Minter and Tyler Matzek have had to pitch almost everyday due to the lack of right-handed pitchers in the bullpen. There hasn't been that strong right-handed presence. That, coupled with a starting rotation that was averaging five innings or less until last week, puts even more pressure on a short-handed bullpen.
"The bullpen guys have done a remarkably good job--again, a small sample size of last night not-withstanding--of trying to keep the Braves in the game and holding down the fort."
Caray said the additions of Martin and Shane Greene, once he gets back up to big league form, will help stabilize the bullpen.
"Now that it looks like Martin's on his way back, you're going to get Shane Greene here in a couple of weeks I would assume, things will start to stabilize down there," Caray continued.
"I think the confidence that we'll have in the bullpen is going to increase because they'll be in their assigned roles and they'll be in a much better position on a day-to-day basis to get those critical outs that Brian Snitker needs them to get."
