The Atlanta United (4-3-4) played the New England Revolution to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, behind an attacking offense led by midfielder Thiago Almada and forward Luiz Araujo.
The draw extended the Five Stripes unbeaten streak at MBS to thirteen straight matches dating back to Aug 28, 2021.
Manager Gonzalo Pineda’s squad has scored eight goals over the past three matches with an attacking offense, great passing and accurate shooting at the goal.
“They’ve attacked, and they have gotten these chances and these shots and frankly they’ve gotten the goals also” said Atlanta United analyst Jason Longshore when joined Dukes and Bell.
Unfortunately for the United, the good offensive play has only resulted in two wins over the past six matches. But optimism is high that with the continued development of these young stars, combined with the eventual return of megastar Josef Martinez, that the Five Stripes will be in a great position to make a strong end of season push.
When explaining to Dukes and Bell what could be coming for this squad as they get later into the season, and have some of their key injured players to return Jason was excited to say, “If this team attacks like that, and just defends a little tiny bit better, it’s a team that can win a lot of playoff games.”
Martinez could be ready to return by late summer. Adding one of the most prolific scorers in the MLS back to this offense should create a dangerous team in the future.
