Three days is how long convicted murderer Charles Edward Smith spent on the run after walking away from a transitional center in Atlanta last Wednesday.
Gwinnett County Police, with the help of a police K-9, apprehended Smith Saturday night in an area of unincorporated Lawrenceville.
Authorities say when they caught up to Smith, the escapee had his hands around the dog, and a stun gun was deployed to bring him under control.
Smith is now charged with escape and parole violation.
Previously sentenced to life in prison for a 1992 murder in Clayton County, Smith had been paroled to the center located on Ponce de Leon in March.
It remains unclear how Smith was able to walk away from the minimum security facility which houses about 250 men.
