An armed suspect was arrested after attempting to rob a Chick-fil-A at the Midtown location Monday afternoon.
Investigators said that police officers responded to a robbery call around 3 pm at the Chick-fil-A location in Colony Square. According to the police report, witnesses stated that a black male walked inside and demanded money from the cashier. After the suspect fired three shots, the cashier fled to the back of the store, and the suspect then fled the scene. However, Sgt. John Chafee with the Atlanta Police Department (APD) said the shots came from an armed citizen who tried to stop the robbery and held the robbery suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived.
The latest robbery adds to the current uptick in crime throughout the metro. In 2020 the APD investigated over 150 homicides. Law enforcement officials are struggling to gain control and find solutions to combat crime in the city. Over the weekend, Atlanta hosted the NBA All-Star Game. In anticipation of large crowds, the APD scheduled 12-hour shifts and worked with public health and safety officials the help see to it that restaurants and clubs follow proper COVID-19 guidelines mandated by the governor during the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the efforts to control crime during the NBA All-Star Weekend, APD tweeted that the city experienced 14 shootings and two homicides.
Sgt. Chafee says no one was injured during the attempted robbery at Chick-fil-A. He also added that the suspect was arrested and is expected to be charged with armed robbery.
