Last week versus the Buffalo Bills Drake London and Bijan Robinson got 24 out of the 31 total targets, Drake had 16 and Bijan had eight. Now, London caught 10 of the 16 targets and Bijan caught six of his eight, so Michael Penix Jr. targeting mainly two players Monday night against the Bills worked for the most part, but earlier today former Atlanta Falcons quarterback and now analyst for the Atlanta Falcons Radio Network Dave Archer joined The Morning Shift and explained why Atlanta doesn’t want to make a habit of that.
“I think in the real world you’d like to have more people involved, there’s no question about that. I think they want to have more people involved.” Archer said
Dave does admit that if those targets are turning into receptions then that’s fine, but does say overall it’ll be better for Penix to spread the ball around.
Drake London is Michael Penix Jr. 's top receiver, so there’s nothing wrong with him getting the lion's share of targets. Bijan Robinson is the Falcons’ best player and offensive weapon, so it’s natural he’ll get a lot of targets in the pass game as well, but what can’t happen is Penix gets locked on just those two guys, force feeds them the ball to the point where he’s making bad decisions, putting the ball in danger, turning the ball over, and making defenses feel like the Falcons’ other weapons aren’t a threat because that’s when Atlanta will get into trouble.
After London and Robinson both had monster games Monday night against the Bills it’s likely the 49ers will be giving them extra attention, so there’s a good chance we’ll see Penix have an opportunity to show he can get the ball to all of his receivers and play makers on Sunday night.
