When you think of exercise, what comes to mind? Many people tend to associate only walking with exercise. However, Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale County Health Departments want to remind you that we are all different, so the way we stay active will be different too! Regardless of your body size, ability level, or budget, there are things you can do that keep our bodies fit and our hearts strong.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with hypertension (high blood pressure) being one of the main risk factors. Almost 1 in 2 US adults have hypertension (blood pressure ≥130/80), and the majority are not in goal range1. Race and ethnicity, particularly for African Americans, has been linked to greater risk of and worse outcomes of heart disease. More importantly, disparities in economic resources and healthcare access contribute to these statistics across minority groups.
If you have been diagnosed with hypertension, it is important to work with a healthcare provider to make a plan that's best for you, which may be a combination of lifestyle changes (change in eating plan, exercise, stress management), as well as medication. The great thing about staying active is that it not only helps reduce blood pressure, but it also reduces blood sugar and cholesterol, improves mood and sleep, relieves joint pain, and more! If the gym doesn't appeal to you, or if your budget is limited, consider using online fitness videos for inspiration, or get some fresh air at your local park! Knock out tasks you need to do, like washing the car or mowing the lawn, as ways to get more activity while accomplishing your to-do list.
Getting active is often more fun with others; link up with a family member or friend in person or by phone for an activity you both enjoy!
