Georgia and the nation are mourning the loss of longtime Congressman David Scott, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 80. Scott served more than two decades in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s 13th Congressional District since 2003.
A trailblazer in Washington, Scott made history as the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, where he became a leading voice on issues impacting farmers, food assistance programs, and rural communities. Throughout his career, he was also known for advocating for veterans, education, healthcare access, and working families.
Before heading to Congress, Scott built a long political career in Georgia, serving in both the Georgia House of Representatives and State Senate. His public service career spanned nearly five decades.
Leaders across Georgia quickly shared tributes following the news. Many praised Scott for his dedication to the people of Georgia and for the impact he made both locally and nationally. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens called him a tireless advocate, while Senator Jon Ossoff honored his years of service.
