After another disappointing regular season, the Atlanta Hawks showed they can compete with the best in a tough six-game series against the Boston Celtics. Now, the Hawks look to an offseason that promises to bring changes to the roster. With starters like John Collins and Clint Capela possibly, or likely, on the move, its time to start looking for replacements. Insert Onyeka Okongwu.

The Hawks sixth pick in the 2020 Draft has been a solid contributor for Atlanta through his three-year career, but is he ready for an expanded role. Alex Chung and Chris Goforth discussed the possibility on the "Chris Goforth Show."

Onyeka Okongwu had his best season in 2023, averaging close to 10 PPG. and 7 RPG, while shooting 64% from the field. In limited action, Okongwu was effective and efficient. The former USC Trojan is also about $13 million cheaper than current starting center, Clint Capela.

While not the rim protector Capela is, Alex Chung pointed out that the Okongwu is the "more versatile defender" and can switch out on smaller guards and defend on the perimeter. In addition, Okongwu is the more skilled offensive player between the two, especially if Head Coach, Quin Snyder, can help him develop a three-point shot.

Being the younger, cheaper, and more versatile option bodes well for Onyeka Okongwu, as the Hawks will certainly entertain the idea of trading Capela. The 22-year old could be getting his shot to be the starter. A position he seems more than ready for.
