No matter how you want to dissect it, the 2022-23 season for the Atlanta Hawks ended how many analysts predicted. Despite overachieving a few years ago and reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, the Hawks’ regular season record has hovered around .500 since their magical run and they have struggled to make the playoffs the past two seasons. After being knocked out in the first-round of the postseason by the Boston Celtics this year, the attention turns to the front office and how they will handle the roster moving forward.
Brian Geltzeiler, NBA host on Sirius XM, joined Dukes & Bell and gave his thoughts on what to expect for the Hawks going into this offseason. It seems like nobody on this roster is safe and Geltzeiler made it clear that current GM Landry Fields and his staff might be looking to Coach Snyder to help put this roster in order.
“One thing I think is going to be different about how the Hawks decide to handle this offseason is Snyder’s going to have some input here. Snyder’s going to kind of be able to let them know the kind of players he’s looking for, what he wants here and what he wants to go with and I think he ends up having a heck of a lot more input here than he ever did in Utah.”
After Travis Schlenk stepped away as GM/President of Basketball Operations last December to take a role as special advisor to Principal Owner Tony Ressler, the team was turned over to new GM Landry Fields with former Hawk sharpshooter Kyle Korver being brought in as Assistant General Manager. This led to questions and concerns about the inexperience of the decision-makers in the front office.
Questions about chemistry between superstar Trae Young and newly-added All-Star Dejounte Murray loomed heavily over the regular season and with the early exit from yet another postseason trip, the focus now turns to the offseason and Hawks fans have to wonder who REALLY will be making the personnel decisions regarding the team going into next season.
