Falcons committed to Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa competing for starting role

While the Atlanta Falcons have been on the receiving end of positivity in relation to preseason nods, such as Bijan Robinson and Drake London being named to the Top 25 Under 25 list to Robinson himself being listed as the best running back ahead of the 2026, the conversations surrounding Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. continue as the two will battle for the rights to be named the Week 1 starter.

“You said you don’t believe it’s a competition,” 92-9 The Game’s Carl Dukes said as he and cohost Mark Zinno weighed in on what the Falcons have said will be a competition for the starting role. “I didn’t say I don’t believe it’s a competition, I said they’ve said nothing to concretely describe Michael Penix [Jr.] health at this time. Just because he’s on track, doesn’t mean he’s healthy enough to start camp,” Zinno continued as he explained why believes Tagovailoa will more than likely be the Week 1 starter.

“If he’s not healthy for training camp, then it’s Tua’s [Tagovailoa] job,” Zinno said. “That’s just the reality of it until they tell us otherwise,” he continued, however in response, Dukes noted why he believes Penix Jr. has done “everything he can to be ready for camp. He knows what’s at stake,” Dukes said. “I think he’s going to give himself an opportunity to compete,” Dukes said.
