WAMO is proud to be partnering with the Pittsburgh Penguins to support Black Hockey History Month.

There are exciting events and activities coming this month.

First, join us on Sunday, February 4 for a screening of “Beyond Their Years” the story of Herb Carnegie and Buck O’Neil, sports and social justice icons who were excluded from the sports they loved because of their race, but would become highly accomplished in hockey and baseball respectively.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Carnegie Initiative and Pittsburgh Hardball Academy are presenting the screening at the Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall in Munhall. You can RSVP to the event here.

On Tuesday, the Penguins will be holding a “VIP Skate” at Historic Hunt Armory in Shadyside with the Black Girl Hockey Club.

The event is invitation only, but if you’d like to attend please email the Penguins at communityinitiatives@pittsburghpenguins.com.

That same day, the Penguins will take to the ice against the Winnipeg Jets at PPG Paints Arena at 7 p.m. and will celebrate Black History Month with their Black Hockey History Game.

A pre-gam pep rally will be held outside of the area with the City of Pittsburgh/School District of Pittsburgh ‘One-Band-One-Sound’ All-City Marching Band.

A pre-game VIP reception with the Black Girl Hockey Club, rally towels for those in attendance, a spotlight honoring Black leader and others in Pittsburgh, a rendition of The National Anthem will be performed by award-winning vocalist Lyndsey Smith, a performance of the Black National Anthem by the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Choir during the first intermission and more!

It will be the Penguins first game since the All-Star Break.
