Arrested Development using the power of music to bring awareness about Alzheimer's

Buckhead Theater concert February 4

Speech of Arrested Development says Alzheimer's has touched his life personally. "We wanted to get involved in bringing awareness to this horrible disease. In my community, more than half of us will struggle with high blood pressure (more than our White counterparts). My father still struggles with this as well. And high blood pressure is a key risk factor for developing dementia in later life."

On February 4, 2022, Arrested Development and other Georgia grassroots musicians will join with the Dementia Spotlight Foundation (DSF) for the 9th Annual Alzheimer's Music Fest. It's being held at Atlanta's Buckhead Theater.

Two-time Grammy winner Speech tells Audacy Atlanta's Maria Boynton, "We learned that Alzheimer's can apparently affect anywhere from 14–100% more African Americans than white Americans. And older Black Americans are twice as likely to have dementia than older white Americans. So Arrested Development wanted to use the power of music to bring awareness & help fight this disease."

According to DSF's Executive Director Whitney Oeltmann, "We love the power of music. With the pandemic, our mission has been somewhat neglected. For DSF, we feel that music is medicine, music heals the soul, and for some, music is an activator. Studies have shown that it can engage the brain."

Singer-songwriter Vince Albert Zangaro is the founder of the Alzheimer's Music Fest. "We are committed to raising much-needed funds for Alzheimer's and dementia communities," says Zangara adding, "This festival is going into its ninth year. Our goal for this fundraiser is to let people know that we are here."
