The AutoNsider Verdict
Subaru is entering one of the most competitive segments in the automotive industry with the all-new 2026 Uncharted. While the name may leave some buyers scratching their heads, the vehicle itself makes a much stronger first impression.
Built in partnership with Toyota, the Uncharted shares much of its engineering with the Toyota C-HR EV, which I recently drove at Toyota's media launch. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Toyota's electric platform is refined, quiet, and confidence-inspiring. Subaru has added its own personality through standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE, additional ground clearance, and styling that aligns with the brand's adventurous image.
The bigger question is whether that's enough.
With increasing competition from Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, and Toyota itself, every new EV has to answer one simple question.
Why should buyers choose this one?
After spending time behind the wheel, I believe Subaru has a compelling answer for a very specific customer.
Why This Vehicle Matters
Subaru owners are among the most loyal customers in the industry. Many have been waiting for an electric vehicle that still feels unmistakably like a Subaru.
The Uncharted represents a significant step forward from the Solterra.
It delivers more power, faster charging, better technology, and a more refined driving experience while finally adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS), giving owners access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network.
For many buyers, that charging connector alone eliminates one of the biggest concerns about owning an EV.
First Impressions
I'll admit it.
I'm still not sold on the name.
"Uncharted" sounds more like an outdoor documentary than a vehicle. Fortunately, you'll spend far more time driving it than saying its name.
The Coastal Wolf Gray Metallic paint paired with the aggressive front fascia gives the crossover a modern appearance without trying too hard to look futuristic.
Inside, Subaru continues moving upscale.
The cabin feels open, clean, and remarkably quiet. Material quality is noticeably improved, and the massive 14-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard without becoming overwhelming.
On the Road
The biggest surprise wasn't acceleration.
It was refinement.
The ride quality is exceptionally smooth, and road noise is well controlled. The suspension absorbs rough pavement without feeling soft or disconnected, making long drives surprisingly relaxing.
Power comes from dual electric motors producing 338 horsepower, providing instant torque exactly as buyers expect from an electric vehicle.
It's certainly quick.
However, if you've driven a Tesla Model Y Performance, you'll immediately notice the difference. The Uncharted accelerates confidently but lacks the neck-snapping urgency of Tesla's performance models.
That isn't necessarily a criticism.
Subaru appears to have prioritized comfort and confidence over outright speed.
For many buyers, that's probably the right decision.
Charging and Range
Range remains one area where the Uncharted trails several competitors.
The EPA-estimated 273 miles should comfortably cover most daily driving, commuting, and weekend errands.
Long-distance travelers, however, may wish for another 40 to 60 miles before needing to recharge.
Charging performance is respectable.
The 74.7-kWh battery supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing charging from approximately 10 to 80 percent in about 28 minutes under ideal conditions.
Battery preconditioning helps optimize charging speeds during colder weather.
More importantly, Subaru equips the Uncharted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, opening access to thousands of Tesla Superchargers across North America.
That significantly improves the ownership experience.
TechnologyTechnology is one of the Uncharted's strongest selling points.

The standard power liftgate, nearly 8.2 inches of ground clearance, generous cargo space, and Subaru's proven all-wheel-drive system make it a legitimate year-round family vehicle.
For buyers living in areas with snow, heavy rain, gravel roads, or outdoor lifestyles, those advantages still matter.
Dealer Secret
Here's something many shoppers may not realize.
The Subaru Uncharted and Toyota C-HR EV are close relatives beneath the sheet metal.
That means your purchase decision should come down less to horsepower or battery size and more to which brand better matches your priorities.
If Subaru's dealer experience, reputation for all-weather capability, and loyal ownership community appeal to you, the Uncharted offers meaningful advantages.
Buyer Alert
If your primary concern is maximum driving range, this probably shouldn't be your first stop.
Several competitors exceed 300 miles on a charge.
If your daily commute regularly approaches 200 miles or you frequently travel long interstate distances, compare charging stops and range carefully before making a purchase.

Instead, Subaru focused on building an electric crossover that feels familiar to longtime Subaru owners while significantly improving comfort, technology, and charging convenience.
For buyers who value confidence in all weather, everyday usability, and a smooth, quiet driving experience, the Uncharted deserves a place on your shopping list.
I simply wish Subaru had paired those strengths with another 40 to 60 miles of range.
