The Ford Expedition Tremor Helped Us Carry Our Daughter Into Her Next Chapter

College move-in tested our emotions, our backs, and the capacity of one very large SUV

AUTONSIDER DECISION: Recommended with conditions.
Buy the Tremor for its capability, not simply for its aggressive appearance.

This is the time of year when families across the country load vehicles with clothes, bedding, electronics, and more dorm room supplies than any student could possibly need.

For some parents, college move-in means driving a few hours away. For others, it means putting their child on an airplane. For our family, it meant packing an 18-year-old lifetime into a 2026 Ford Expedition Tremor and driving from Atlanta to Washington, DC.

Our daughter had never stayed away from home for more than two nights in her entire life. My wife and I had traveled without her only once, for about four days, and she was around two years old at the time.

Needless to say, taking her to Howard University was daunting. There was the emotional reality of leaving our baby girl hundreds of miles from home. Then there was the logistical reality of getting four adults, luggage for five days, and what appeared to be the contents of a small department store to Washington without shipping anything.

The Ford Expedition Tremor arrived at exactly the right time.

Packing an Entire Dorm Room
The Expedition is a full-size, three-row SUV, but our daughter apparently considered every inch of its cargo capacity a personal challenge.

Once my wife, daughter, and I gathered all the boxes, bedding, clothes, electronics, decorations, and dorm room essentials in one place, I realized that even one of the largest SUVs on the road might not be large enough.

Our son was traveling with us, which meant we needed seating and luggage space for four adults. We were also spending five days in Washington, so we were not packing overnight bags. We used almost every available inch inside the Expedition. Even then, some cargo wouldn't fit.

Daryl Killian

Before leaving Atlanta, I purchased a WEIZE folding hitch-mounted cargo carrier. It measures 60 inches by 20 inches, attaches to a two-inch receiver, and its manufacturer rates it to carry up to 500 pounds. We didn't come close to putting that much weight on it, but the extra space was essential. Anything that would not fit inside the Expedition went onto the carrier and was securely strapped down.

That carrier earned its keep before we ever left the driveway.

A Comfortable Place for an Emotional Drive
The Tremor is built to handle far more than interstate travel. Its high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. It also has four-wheel drive, a 3.73 electronic locking rear differential, skid plates, 33-inch all-terrain tires, Rock Crawl mode, and an off-road suspension.

Daryl Killian

We did not test that capability during this trip. I previously drove this generation of the Expedition off-road in Kentucky when Ford introduced the new body design. I already knew what the Tremor could do away from pavement.

This test was different. Its job was to keep four adults comfortable while carrying an enormous amount of cargo for more than 600 miles.

Despite the load, the Expedition never felt strained. The engine provided plenty of passing power, and the ride remained composed. The size that can make the Expedition feel excessive around town became one of its greatest advantages on the highway.

BlueCruise Reduced the Workload
One of the most useful features was Ford BlueCruise. On compatible sections of divided highway, it can control the vehicle’s speed and steering while allowing the driver to take their hands off the wheel. The driver must continue watching the road and remain prepared to take control.

BlueCruise does not make the Expedition self-driving. It reduced some of the fatigue that comes with a long interstate trip. It kept the vehicle centered in its lane, maintained an appropriate following distance, and handled long stretches of highway smoothly.

It is the kind of feature that can sound unnecessary at a dealership. After several hours on the highway, its value becomes much easier to understand. Buyers should confirm how much BlueCruise service is included because continued use requires an active plan after the trial period.

An Office on Wheels
We were especially glad our son came along. We wanted him to be part of the family moment, but we also needed his youth and strength when it was time to unload. That became even more important than we expected.

He also needed to work during the trip. With his tablet and cellphone mounted to a headrest device holder, the second row became his mobile office. Ford’s 400-watt Pro Power Onboard system allowed us to keep phones, tablets, and computers charged while traveling.

Instead of losing an entire workday while I drove, our son could remain connected and productive. The Expedition functioned as transportation, storage, a charging station, and an office on wheels.

The vehicle was so full that we could not properly use the Flex Powered Console or access the optional steel console vault. I can see the vault being useful around Atlanta for securing a wallet, camera, or other valuables. On this trip, we had simply packed ourselves out of the ability to reach it.

That was not Ford’s fault. That was a Howard freshman with a very ambitious dorm room plan.

The Genius of the Split Gate
The Expedition’s split gate may have been the smartest feature on the entire vehicle. The upper portion opens like a conventional liftgate, while the lower section folds down separately.

With the cargo area packed from the floor to the roof, that lower gate helped keep boxes and luggage contained whenever we opened the rear. Without it, half of our daughter’s dorm room could have fallen into the parking lot every time the liftgate went up.

The lower gate also gave us a place to sit, organize smaller items, and decide what needed to come out next. It became a useful work surface during unloading. Many features look clever during a walk-around. The split gate proved its value every time we opened the back of the Expedition.

Nearly Five Hours Later
It took somewhere between four and five hours to unload the Expedition and get our daughter moved into her dorm.

The parents moving boys into college had a little friendly fun at the expense of those of us moving girls. They seemed to arrive with a few bags, a television, and some boxes. We looked as though we were moving the entire family into Howard.

We needed every bit of our son’s young back and energy. I am not saying my wife, daughter, and I could not have finished without him, but we might still be unloading today.

Eventually, everything made it into the room. We opened the boxes, arranged the furniture, and began turning an unfamiliar dorm room into our daughter’s new home. That was when the physical work ended, and the emotional part became real.

The Cargo We Could Not Bring Home
The Expedition carried four adults, five days of luggage, and an overabundance of dorm room supplies from Atlanta to Washington. But it came home with only three of us.

There are moments as a parent that you know are coming, but nothing can completely prepare you for them. Dropping our daughter off at Howard brought pride, excitement, gratitude, and more than a few tears.

Our baby girl is officially a Baby Bison.

Who Should Buy It?
Buy the Expedition Tremor if you regularly travel with five or more people, need a usable third row, tow a boat or trailer, carry large amounts of equipment, or travel where four-wheel drive and additional off-road hardware have real value. It is also a strong family road-trip vehicle when passenger comfort and power for multiple devices matter.

Who Should Skip It?
Skip it if you rarely use the third row, drive mostly around town, or have no intention of towing or leaving pavement. At nearly 210 inches long and more than 94 inches wide with its mirrors, it requires care in parking garages and tight lots. The 18 mpg combined estimate also means families should calculate their annual fuel expense before buying.

Standard Length or MAX?
The standard Expedition provides 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row. A MAX provides 37.4 cubic feet and nearly 12 additional inches of body length. Our standard-length Tremor needed an exterior carrier to transport four adults, five days of luggage, and the dorm supplies. Families that routinely use all three rows while carrying luggage should strongly consider a MAX. Ford does not offer the Tremor in MAX form, so buyers must choose between maximum trail capability and maximum interior cargo space.

Pricing excludes Ford’s $2,595 destination charge and optional equipment. Always confirm the exact equipment and total MSRP on the window sticker.

Buyer Alert: Watch the Payload
A maximum tow rating does not mean every Expedition can safely tow that amount in every situation. Passengers, luggage, accessories, a hitch-mounted carrier, and trailer tongue weight all count against available payload. The exact carrying capacity for a specific vehicle appears on the Tire and Loading Information label inside the driver’s door.

A hitch carrier may be advertised to support 500 pounds, but its own weight and cargo still count against the Expedition’s limits. The carrier’s rating does not override the vehicle’s payload, hitch, or tongue-weight limits.

Dealer Secret: Do Not Negotiate From the Payment
An Expedition approaching $90,000 can produce a very different monthly payment depending on the selling price, loan term, interest rate, down payment, and trade value. Negotiate the vehicle price, trade value, interest rate, and add-ons separately. Ask for the full out-the-door price before discussing how much you want to pay each month.

Also confirm which connected services are included temporarily. BlueCruise, connectivity, navigation, and security services may require paid plans after their included periods expire.

Competitors Worth Driving
  • Chevrolet Tahoe Z71: The most direct alternative for a family wanting full-size space with rugged styling and off-road equipment.
  • GMC Yukon AT4: A more upscale interpretation of the same basic mission, with strong passenger comfort and trail-focused capability.
  • Jeep Wagoneer: Substantial passenger and cargo room with a luxury-oriented cabin. Carefully compare pricing, fuel use, and long-term ownership costs.
  • Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro: A hybrid-powered off-road alternative. Compare third-row packaging and cargo space directly with the Expedition before deciding.
Here Is Where I Would Spend My Money
I would recommend the Expedition Tremor with conditions. Our trip proved that its space, highway comfort, BlueCruise, power outlets, and split gate can make a demanding family trip easier. But I would only spend Tremor money if I regularly needed its towing or off-road capability.

For normal family transportation, I would start with an Expedition Active. For frequent travel with every seat occupied, I would consider an Active MAX or Platinum MAX because of the additional space behind the third row.

The AutoNsider Decision

At $86,895 as tested, the Expedition Tremor is expensive. It is larger and more capable than many families need for everyday driving. Its size, fuel consumption, and specialized trail equipment become difficult to justify if they are rarely used.

But for families that regularly travel with several passengers, tow, carry large amounts of equipment, or need one vehicle to perform several jobs, the Expedition makes a strong case for itself. BlueCruise made the highway miles easier. Pro Power Onboard kept our devices charged. The hitch receiver allowed us to add cargo capacity. The interior kept four adults comfortable, and the split gate prevented carefully packed belongings from spilling onto the ground.

The Expedition Tremor did not make leaving our daughter in Washington any easier. It removed many of the logistical problems surrounding an already difficult day. It gave us one less thing to worry about while our family navigated one of the biggest transitions of our lives.

One for the Road

ONE FOR THE ROAD: Sometimes the best family vehicle is not simply the one that carries the most people or cargo. It is the one that helps your family carry the moments you will remember forever.

Sydney, we are proud of you.

Home is always right behind you.

Howard University, take good care of her.

HU... You know!
