A 108-year-old New Jersey woman who lived through the 1918 flu pandemic beat the coronavirus in a “tremendous show of strength,” Gov. Phil Murphy said.
At his daily briefing Thursday, Murphy said Sylvia Goldscholl was just 7 years old when the deadly flu pandemic killed millions across the globe. "And she survived it," the governor said.
Goldscholl, of Allendale, tested positive for COVID-19 last month, Murphy said, “and now we can say she has beaten that.”
“So, to you, Sylvia, we send you all of our best for the many, many more years to come,” Murphy added. “How about, perhaps, another 108?”
Murphy announced Thursday that there were 142,704 cases of coronavirus in New Jersey, with 9,946 deaths.
But the governor also said 366 people were discharged from state hospitals on Wednesday alone.
