Recently on The Rashad Richey Morning Show, The owner of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks, Derrick Hayes discussed his journey and recent challenges in opening a brand new location in the Downtown Atlanta area. Mr. Hayes provided insights into the evolution of his business and his response to recent setbacks.

Originally from West Philadelphia, Mr. Hayes moved to Atlanta and started his food venture with Dave’s Philly Water Ice, later rebranding it as Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks. His business thrived, notably at a flagship location on Forsyth Street, but faced a major setback earlier this year when a water main break caused extensive damage to the site.

Instead of seeing this as a defeat, Mr. Hayes viewed it as an opportunity for growth. He revealed that, following the damage, he decided not to reopen the damaged location. During a drive through Atlanta, Mr. Hayes found a new opportunity when he noticed a vacant space formerly occupied by a Waffle House on Marietta Street.

Mr. Hayes stated "This location belongs to me. I know God ordered my steps the right way to come to this location. Has a lot more foot traffic. It’s just going to be better for us in the stadium, being as though we’re inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium." The new site, located at 300 West Marietta Street, is expected to open in eight to ten weeks and will feature enhanced design elements and additional offerings, including beer.

Mr. Hayes also touched on his collaboration with Pinky Cole, founder of Slutty Vegan. Despite the demands of managing their respective businesses, Mr. Hayes highlighted how their mutual respect and shared vision have been crucial in balancing their professional and family lives.

Looking forward, Mr. Hayes is expanding his business significantly. He announced plans to open 15 franchise units and seven corporate stores, with recent negotiations for eight additional locations. Mr. Hayes expressed enthusiasm about the future, citing continued growth and national recognition as key goals.

In closing, Mr. Hayes shared motivational advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. “Life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon,” he said. “It’s all about how you run your race.”
