The American love affair with sedans has waned in recent years, giving way to the SUV craze driven by promises of space, comfort, and versatility. But on the first day of the media launch for the all-new 2025 Audi A5 and S5 Sportback in Aspen, I was reminded—once again—that there's still a space in the market for cars. Not just any cars, but those that adapt, evolve, and still cater to those who care about driving. I had just flown in from Atlanta, and my drive partner, Kristin Shaw from Dallas, and I both stepped into these sleek five-doors, ready to see what Audi had in store.

Audi has repositioned the A5 family with more purpose than ever before. These aren't just refreshed sedans—they're five-door Sportbacks that blend classic proportions with hatchback versatility and Audi's signature sophistication. While the silhouette maintains the elegance of a sedan, lifting the rear hatch reveals practicality that rivals many crossovers.

Let's start with refinement. The A5's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is tuned for balance and smoothness. With 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, it moves with confidence but doesn't scream for attention. What stood out during our multi-hour route was how composed the A5 felt. It's not overly plush, but it's undeniably premium. The ride absorbs road imperfections without feeling too soft, and the steering—thanks to Audi's progressive rack and reengineered bushings—feels responsive and natural. For the everyday driver who still appreciates feedback through the wheel, this strikes a great balance.

Now, the S5? A different story—same platform, distinct personality. The turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 packs 362 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. The reintroduced 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox makes all the right moves, especially when paired with the car's mechanical sport rear differential. The S5 feels agile and athletic, yet never harsh. In tighter corners and sweeping bends, it inspires confidence and delivers legitimate fun. Launch control at 4,000 RPM in a Sportback? Yes, please.

Both cars benefit from increased rear legroom and a best-in-class cargo area—up to 37.5 cu. ft. in the S5 with the seats folded. That added versatility makes these five-door coupes a real alternative to utility vehicles. And while Kristin and I didn't bring luggage or gear on this drive, it was easy to picture how easily these cars would swallow up a weekend's worth of bags or a folded stroller.

Inside, the technology story is stronger than ever. The curved OLED MMI screen is angled toward the driver for improved ergonomics, featuring a wrist ledge that enhances comfort while navigating. The redesigned head-up display is now 85% larger and offers sharper resolution. Audi's digital cockpit remains among the best in the industry—rich in detail, responsive, and customizable.

A standout new feature for 2025 is the optional front passenger screen display. It's not just a gimmick. With built-in active privacy shutter technology, the display remains invisible to the driver when active, preventing distractions. Yet the front passenger gets a crisp, clear screen to handle navigation, entertainment, or settings—all without interfering with the driving experience. It's a perfect example of how Audi integrates technology with purpose and safety in mind.

Speaking of safety and visibility, Audi continues to lead in lighting. It's easy to forget they started the LED daytime running light revolution, but the 2025 A5 and S5 evolve it yet again. The digital daytime running lights can be customized with multiple design signatures, allowing owners to personalize their car's "eyes." Out back, the 3D OLED taillights create a visual depth you usually only find in concept cars. The lighting doesn't feel gimmicky either—it enhances the visual clarity and premium feel, both inside and out.

And then there's the new Variable Light Control sunroof, which lets drivers adjust shading in segments—independently for front and rear. It's the kind of thoughtful innovation that sets the A5 and S5 apart from the crowded field of luxury competitors who lean too heavily on oversized screens or tech-for-tech 's-sake gimmicks.

After five hours of driving in Aspen, on roads that offered everything from wide-open stretches to technical elevation changes, I can confidently say that Audi's latest Sportbacks prove a point. There's still a place for smart, refined, well-engineered cars. And in the case of the A5 and S5, those cars just happen to have five doors, sleek profiles, and an identity all their own.

Audi didn't just give us more of the same. They sharpened the formula, added practicality, refined the ride, and brought innovation where it matters. These aren't sedans clinging to the past—they're Sportbacks confidently driving into the future.
