Most Reliable Brand in America. 35 MPG. Still Boxy. Is Subaru’s New Forester Better Than It Looks?

Subaru is stepping into a new chapter with the first Forester Hybrid offered in the United States. Consumer Reports recently ranked Subaru as the most reliable brand in the country, ahead of Lexus and Toyota. The score is based on reported member problems from a study that covered 300,000 vehicles spanning model years 2000 through 2024. With that level of data behind the brand, the expectations for this new hybrid are high. After spending a week in the 2025 Forester Sport Hybrid, finished in Crystal White Pearl, the vehicle delivers on several key promises.

The Forester has never been the most stylish option in the segment. The upright, boxy design looks dated to me, although it remains popular with Subaru loyalists. Even with that shape, the hybrid system brings meaningful efficiency improvements. Subaru’s next-generation hybrid uses a 2.5-liter Atkinson- and Miller-cycle boxer engine paired with electric motors and a high-capacity lithium-ion battery. Total system output is 194 horsepower, which is an increase over the non-hybrid model. In daily driving, the added responsiveness is noticeable during city acceleration and highway merging.

Subaru estimates fuel economy improvements of up to 40 percent in city driving, along with a driving range of up to 581 miles. The efficiency is impressive, considering the Forester does not have the aerodynamic profile of most hybrid SUVs. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive remains one of the brand’s signature strengths and feels dependable in heavy rain. The hybrid system does not compromise that capability.

I have been critical of Subaru’s Eyesight driver assist system in past models because of its sensitivity. This updated system operates with more refinement. Subaru widened the field of view and improved the control software, which results in smoother operation. Features such as Reverse Automatic Braking, Emergency Stop Assist, Blind Spot Detection, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert add meaningful layers of protection. The rear seat reminder is especially helpful for families with young children.

The cabin provides a comfortable space for a family of five. Rear legroom is strong, and the StarTex upholstery looks durable enough for daily use. Subaru continues to keep physical controls for volume tuning and climate adjustments, which is a welcome decision. The 11.6-inch touchscreen handles navigation, connectivity, and vehicle settings, but the physical controls simplify the driving experience.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operate consistently. The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster displays information clearly. The wireless phone charger works, but a slanted shelf or a textured surface would help prevent the phone from sliding and losing its charge. Charging ports include both USB-A and USB-C. With so many devices now using USB-C, I would prefer to see more USB-C ports throughout the interior.

The Harman Kardon audio system performs better than expected. The clarity and subwoofer output stand out for a compact SUV.

For shoppers who value efficiency, capability, and safety, the Forester Hybrid is a strong addition to Subaru’s lineup. The styling remains familiar, but the improvements in performance technology and fuel economy provide real benefits. Subaru loyalists will appreciate the enhancements, and younger buyers will respond to the upgraded infotainment and digital displays.
