2025 Subaru Outback XT Review: The Adventure Wagon That Just Works

2025 Subaru Outback
Daryl Killian

In a world where SUVs and crossovers dominate, the 2025 Subaru Outback XT presents a refreshing alternative. With its low step-in height, spacious interior, and rugged all-weather capability, it's a vehicle that caters to families who want versatility without the bulk. And while the Outback's styling might not turn heads, there's something to be said for a car that blends in while excelling at what it was designed to do.

Powertrain & Performance
Under the hood, the 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER® engine delivers a respectable 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, making highway merging and mountain climbs effortless. It's paired with a Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which I'm typically not a fan of. However, Subaru mitigates the usual CVT complaints with artificially programmed shift points, making it feel more natural under acceleration. It's still a CVT, but it doesn't drone as much as others I've experienced.

Capability & Ride Quality
Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is the star of the show here, offering excellent balance and traction on wet or uneven terrain. Paired with X-MODE® and Hill Descent Control, it's more than capable when the pavement ends. And with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, it can handle rough trails better than many crossovers while maintaining an easy step-in height for everyday use.

On the road, the Outback rides smoothly, absorbing bumps well. It leans more toward comfort than sportiness, but that's exactly what most buyers in this segment are looking for.

Interior & Tech
The biggest surprise? The chocolate brown interior—a color choice that I wouldn't have picked, but somehow works beautifully with the blue exterior. The cabin has a moody, upscale vibe, almost like a cigar lounge on wheels. The materials feel high quality, and Subaru's 11.6-inch STARLINK® infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ keeps the tech experience modern and convenient.

Subaru's EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology is standard, and while it's a necessary safety feature, I found it to be a little too sensitive for my liking. The Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering worked well, but it occasionally felt intrusive with its warnings. Still, with Top Safety Pick ratings from IIHS and a 5-star NHTSA safety score, it's hard to argue against Subaru's commitment to driver safety.

Final Thoughts: A Practical Alternative to SUVs
The 2025 Outback XT is for those who need capability without excess size. It's easier to get in and out of than a tall SUV, yet it still delivers cargo space, comfort, and rugged durability. No, it won't stand out in a crowded parking lot, but maybe that's the point. Sometimes, blending in means fitting in—whether it's on city streets or backcountry roads.
