The 2026 Subaru Solterra Touring XT Quietly Surprises with Real Refinement

Subaru entered the electric SUV category in 2023 with the first Solterra. The 2024 model showed early strength with Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, spacious seating for families, and a comfortable ride quality. It also shared its core EV platform with the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ. My 2024 review noted that Subaru benefited from the partnership, but the design and technology felt closer to Toyota than anything uniquely Subaru.

The 2026 Solterra delivers the separation that many owners wanted. Subaru revised the front fascia with a cleaner lighting signature, a new illuminated six-star badge, and new wheel designs up to 20 inches. These changes give the Touring XT a more upscale presence. It is the best-looking Subaru that I have reviewed. My daughter said it resembles a Lexus, which is understandable since the Solterra still shares architecture with the BZ and the RZ.

Inside, the cabin improves on the strengths of the prior model. The new 14-inch multimedia system replaces the 12.3-inch screen from 2024. Wireless charging pads now deliver faster, more consistent charging, and the additional USB-C ports support multiple devices. Rear passengers still enjoy useful legroom and the nearly flat floor design. The previous model placed the digital instrument cluster above the steering wheel, which sometimes blocked my line of sight. Subaru improved visibility for 2026, although the reading angle remains unique compared to other compact EVs.

Apple CarPlay works most of the time, but I occasionally experience delays with Waze. This behavior existed in the 2024 Solterra, but Subaru has reduced the frequency of the interruptions. The EyeSight safety system is also less aggressive than before. The 2024 version intervened more quickly, which I felt during lane centering. The 2026 calibration is smoother. Subaru lists a full suite of safety features, including Pre-Collision Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, Traffic Jam Assist, and a Panoramic View Monitor.

The most important change is performance. Subaru increased power output for 2026. The standard dual-motor now generates 233 horsepower, while the Touring XT produces 338 horsepower and reaches 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. The acceleration feels natural and confident. I took my 87-year-old father for a ride across Atlanta. He immediately compared the smoothness to that of his Buick from the Dynaflow era, 1948-1955. The Dynaflow system created continuous acceleration without noticeable shift points, and that comparison accurately describes the feel of this motor configuration.

Range is an area where Subaru made meaningful progress. The 2026 model now uses a 74.7 kWh battery with an estimated range of more than 285 miles. That is an improvement of more than 25 percent over the outgoing version. Fast charging from 10 percent to 80 percent still takes less than 35 minutes, supported by improved battery preconditioning. The NACS charging port is now standard and allows access to Tesla Superchargers. My personal charging experience required re-downloading the Tesla app and manually adding the Solterra. Even with a $250 existing credit from a previous Tesla, I was unable to apply it and had to use a credit card. A 20-minute charge session added roughly 180 miles and cost $23.43. With prices rising, at-home Level 2 charging remains the best option.

Subaru continues to stand apart in capability. Symmetrical All Wheel Drive remains standard with 8.3 inches of ground clearance and X Mode with Snow, Dirt, and Deep Snow Mud. The 2026 updates include more advanced all-wheel drive control that predicts load distribution and adjusts torque delivery for improved traction. This tuning sets the Solterra apart from the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ, which emphasize efficiency and luxury more than off-road confidence.

The 2026 Subaru Solterra Touring XT is the most refined version yet. The styling is stronger, the technology is improved, the acceleration is significantly more responsive, and the range is more competitive. Charging convenience still varies, but the vehicle itself is now well-rounded and more aligned with Subaru's identity. For drivers seeking capability, comfort, and a polished daily-driving experience, the 2026 Solterra deserves serious consideration.
