In a recent interview, Executive Director of Barred Business, Bridgette Simpson, was described as "one of the greatest advocates in this arena in this entire country." Simpson, along with the Bard business team, is passionately working towards providing personal hygiene products, specifically shampoos and conditioners, to women who are currently incarcerated. Simpson believes that prison and jails should not strip away a person's humanity and aims to ensure that incarcerated individuals are treated with dignity. She herself experienced the impact of receiving such hygiene products while behind bars and wants to give back to the community she came from.
The goal is to raise 1200 shampoo and conditioner sets for the women in jail. Currently, they have reached about 300 sets, and the community's support is needed to reach the target. By visiting the Barred Business website, individuals can contribute through a link to purchase the products on Amazon.
Questions may arise regarding the necessity of toiletries for incarcerated individuals, with the assumption that taxpayer dollars cover these basic necessities. Ms. Simpson clarifies that indigent individuals in jail are not provided shampoo and conditioner. Furthermore, taxpayer funds are often utilized for free labor. Thus, these hygiene products are essential for people to maintain their hygiene and dignity while incarcerated.
Barred Business gets its name from its mission to handle all matters concerning individuals behind jail and prison bars who are barred from society. The organization aims to address the various challenges faced by justice-impacted individuals, including the 44,000 collateral consequences Ms. Simpson herself experienced after serving 10 years in prison.
Ms. Simpson's advocacy work has been commended for its effectiveness, and the community is urged to support her cause. Contributions can be made through the Barred Business website, and every donation brings them closer to their goal. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that no one's humanity is forgotten, even behind bars.
