A Reliable Ride with Some Trade-Offs

2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L

The 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L is a compact SUV that offers a range of features and capabilities for drivers seeking a versatile and efficient vehicle. This vehicle couldn't have made its way to my driveway at a better time. My wife and I are going through the unenviable task of shopping for my teenage daughter's first vehicle. We've decided that a small SUV/Crossover will be the safest choice.

However, like any other vehicle, it also has its share of pros and cons. Let's take a closer look at the pros and cons of the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L.

Pros:
All-wheel drive capability: The HR-V AWD EX-L comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard, which provides better traction and stability in challenging driving conditions, such as snow, rain, or uneven terrain. This makes it suitable for drivers who frequently encounter adverse weather conditions or drive on rough roads.

Fuel efficiency: The HR-V AWD EX-L is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that delivers an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 27 mpg, with 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. This makes it a fuel-efficient option for those looking to save on gas expenses, especially during long drives or commutes.

Spacious interior: Despite its compact size, the HR-V AWD EX-L offers a surprisingly spacious and comfortable interior, providing ample room for up to five passengers. Additionally, the rear Magic Seat can be folded flat, creating a versatile and configurable cargo space of 24 cubic feet, which can be expanded to 58.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. This makes it ideal for carrying passengers and cargo (moving into a dorm room at college), making it a practical choice for families or those with an active lifestyle.

Loaded with features: The HR-V AWD EX-L has a generous list of standard features, including leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, a power moonroof, automatic climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. It also includes advanced safety features such as Honda Sensing, which has adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, and more. These features enhance comfort, convenience, and safety while driving, providing a premium experience for passengers.

Agile handling: The HR-V AWD EX-L offers responsive and agile handling, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces and navigate through crowded city streets. The well-tuned suspension and precise steering contribute to a smooth and composed ride, offering a pleasant driving experience.

Cons:
Performance: While the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L offers a decent power output of 158 hp, its acceleration may feel sluggish compared to some of its competitors in the market. The 0-60 mph time of 9.4 seconds and 1/4-mile time of 17.3 seconds at 85 mph may be less impressive for those seeking a more spirited driving experience. And this may not be so bad if you're considering the HR-V for an inexperienced driver.

CVT Transmission: The continuously variable automatic (CVT) transmission in the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L may not be everyone's cup of tea. Some drivers may find it needs more responsiveness and engagement than a traditional automatic or manual transmission. It may produce a droning noise under heavy acceleration, which could be bothersome for some.

Cargo Space: While the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L offers a decent amount of cargo space with 24 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 97 cubic feet of passenger volume, it may be slightly smaller than some of its competitors the compact SUV segment. If you frequently need to haul large items or transport a lot of cargo, the HR-V's cargo space may feel limiting. If you're more like my family, there's plenty of room for home essentials and more than enough room for dorm room supplies and spring-break road trips.

Limited standard Features: Despite being a higher trim level, the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L may come with only some of the advanced standard features that other vehicles in its class offer. For example, features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto may require additional packages or upgrades, which could add to the overall cost of the vehicle.

Fuel Economy: While the EPA-estimated fuel economy of the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L is respectable at 27 mpg combined, 25 mpg city, and 30 mpg highway, it may not be the most fuel-efficient option in the segment. Some other vehicles in the compact SUV class may offer better fuel efficiency, which could be a consideration for those looking to save on long-term fuel costs.

Conclusion:
The 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L offers a lot of positive aspects, including a stylish design, comfortable interior, all-wheel drive capability, and a reputation for reliability. However, it also has its share of drawbacks, such as its performance, CVT transmission, limited cargo space, standard features, and fuel economy. As a potential buyer, it's essential to carefully consider these pros and cons and prioritize what matters most to you in a vehicle. If you value Honda's reputation for reliability, a comfortable ride, and all-wheel drive capability, the 2023 Honda HR-V AWD EX-L may be a good choice. However, if you prioritize performance, cargo space, or advanced standard features, you may want to explore other options in the competitive compact SUV market.

Overall, it's recommended to test drive the vehicle and thoroughly research and compare it with similar cars to make an informed decision that best suits your needs and preferences.

Note: It has made my family's short list of SUVs for my teenage daughter's first vehicle. Stay tuned to find out which one actually lands in our driveway at the end of 2023.
