Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer: Key Takeaways from Kim Emory on the Wake Up With Dee Morning Show
(L-R) Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler, Kim Emory

In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Kimberly "Kim" Emory—a 20-year ovarian cancer survivor, author, and Interim Executive Director of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA)—joined host Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler on the Wake Up With Dee Morning Show to share vital, life-saving information about ovarian cancer.

Diagnosed with Stage II germ cell ovarian cancer in 2006, Kim has transformed her journey into a dedicated mission for education, advocacy, and support. During the interview, she discussed critical facts every woman and family needs to know about the disease.

Critical Facts & Key Insights

  • No Early Screening Test Exists: Unlike breast cancer (mammograms) or cervical cancer (Pap smears), there is currently no diagnostic screening test for ovarian cancer. A CA-125 blood test is a diagnostic tool, but definitive diagnosis requires surgery.
  • Know the Symptoms: Common warning signs include persistent bloating, feeling full quickly, pelvic or abdominal pain, and urinary urgency. If these symptoms persist for more than 2–3 weeks, consult a physician or a gynecologic oncologist.
  • Anyone with Ovaries is at Risk: Ovarian cancer can affect females of any age—from young children to older adults. It stands as the #1 deadliest gynecologic cancer and the #5 cause of cancer-related deaths among women.
  • Delayed Diagnosis is Common: On average, it takes 1.5 years for a woman to receive an official ovarian cancer diagnosis from the time symptoms first appear, often leading to detection at later stages (Stage III or IV).

GOCA Programs & Upcoming Community Events

Kim shared several initiatives hosted by the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance to support survivors and spread awareness across Georgia:

  • Bag of Hope Program: Provides newly diagnosed women in Georgia with a free care package featuring a warm blanket, cozy socks, a journal, and essential resources. Anyone can sponsor or request a Bag of Hope for $100 on their website.
  • OVA It Podcast: Hosted by Kim Emory, this monthly podcast features candid conversations with ovarian cancer survivors sharing their personal journeys, treatments, and advice.
  • Teal Trot (Walk for Hope): Annual awareness walk held at Chastain Park.
  • Teal to Heal: A special runway event at Phipps Plaza/Lenox Square honoring survivors with makeovers and fashion modeling.
