Men’s health, often discussed in whispers or avoided altogether, took center stage during a recent episode of "Let’s Talk About It with the Turners". The conversation featured Dr. Melvin Fussell, a board-certified urologist and founder of UroHard, who shared candid insights on erectile dysfunction, prostate health and the emotional weight many men carry in silence.

The interview focused on the physical, mental and relational impact of men’s sexual health concerns. The Turners opened the discussion by acknowledging the discomfort many men feel when visiting a urologist, particularly when it comes to prostate exams, while emphasizing the importance of proactive care.

Dr. Fussell, who previously operated a successful full-time general urology practice, explained why he shifted his focus toward specialized men’s sexual health care. After years of treating patients in a high-demand field, he said burnout and a growing awareness of unmet needs pushed him to pursue a different path.

During the interview, Dr. Fussell explained that erectile dysfunction is not a one-size-fits-all issue and often stems from a combination of medical and lifestyle factors. He emphasized that effective treatment begins with understanding the root cause, rather than relying solely on medication.

Erectile dysfunction basically comes down to three things. It’s good blood flow, good nerves, and desire,” Dr. Fussell said.

The discussion also highlighted how conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and low testosterone can affect men of all ages, including younger men. Dr. Fussell noted that testosterone levels naturally begin to decline around age 35, but individual health factors play a major role in how symptoms appear.

In addition to addressing erectile dysfunction, the interview explored prostate cancer and the fear many men have of prostate exams and surgery. Dr. Fussell explained how modern surgical techniques, including nerve-sparing prostatectomies, can reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction depending on how advanced the cancer is at the time of diagnosis. He encouraged men not to delay screenings, stressing that early detection allows for more treatment options.

The conversation also touched on the emotional toll sexual health challenges can take on relationships. Dr. Fussell shared that many men seek treatment not only for physical reasons, but to repair intimacy and communication with their partners.

I’m the doctor when the pills don’t work,” he said.

Dr. Fussell’s practice, based in Warner Robins, Georgia, has drawn patients from across the country and internationally. He attributed that reach to a growing demand for honest conversations and personalized care in a space where many men feel overlooked or misunderstood.
