Acura ZDX - Spearheading the Evolution of Luxury Electric SUVs

Acura ZDX
Daryl Killian

My association with Acura traces back to 1989, just a few years after Honda introduced this highly anticipated luxury brand to the U.S. market. During my part-time job at Baranco Acura in Morrow, Ga., selling cars, I was immediately drawn to the brand's allure. During this time, I encountered the Integra, and I was instantly captivated. In fact, when I bought my first car, a blue 1990 Acura Integra RS with a 5-speed manual transmission and no factory radio, I couldn't envision any other vehicle matching its appeal. However, a car accident totaled my beloved 1990 Integra, prompting me to seek its replacement swiftly. Within days, I located a sleek black 1991 Integra LS, complete with a manual transmission, naturally continuing my admiration for Acura's craftsmanship and performance. This faithful companion accompanied me until 1998 when I upgraded to a pre-owned 1995 Acura Vigor, a model often overshadowed by its unconventional 5-cylinder engine. After college, I found my way back to Baranco Acura, this time as a service advisor and later being promoted to service manager. Serving in this role at Acura for many years, I had a front-row seat to witness the innovation and engineering prowess of this advanced technology company that also happened to craft remarkable automobiles. Having seen the ascent and decline of the iconic Acura Legend, as well as the launch of models like the TL, RL, CL, SLX, and MDX during my tenure, I feel uniquely equipped to provide comprehensive coverage of this brand. In fact, I met my lovely wife in the service department when she brought her 1998 Integra in for service. One might say that my experiences with Acura equate to a match made in Heaven.

Indeed, you might be wondering why Acura chose to preview the ZDX at a jazz festival. Well, the decision reflects Acura's commitment to cultural engagement and community involvement. The Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans is not just about music; it's a celebration of art, culture, and diversity. By debuting the ZDX at such an event, Acura showcases its alignment with these values and emphasizes the ZDX's versatility and appeal across different lifestyles and interests. Additionally, Acura's support of the Trombone Shorty Foundation is a testament to its dedication to nurturing and preserving music culture. The 11th Annual Shorty Fest, presented by Acura, took place at Tipitina's on Monday, May 1, to celebrate music and community. Organized by the Trombone Shorty Foundation, with support from the Gia Maione Prima Foundation and Tip-It Foundation, this event is a rallying call to safeguard the future of our musical heritage. The lineup included performances by acclaimed artists such as Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Galactic featuring Anjelika "Jelly" Joseph, Tank and the Bangas, and "The Havana Funk Experience" with Cimafunk, alongside special appearances by students from the Trombone Shorty Academy. By sponsoring events like Shorty Fest, Acura demonstrates its commitment to supporting the arts and fostering a vibrant cultural landscape for future generations.

Unmatched Performance and Driving Dynamics: At the core of the ZDX lies a relentless pursuit of performance excellence. The Type S variant, boasting an estimated 500 horsepower, represents the pinnacle of Acura's Precision Crafted Performance spirit, delivering exhilarating acceleration (in sport mode) and dynamic handling. This performance is not just about raw power; it's about precision and refinement. Acura engineers have tuned the ZDX's chassis and suspension to offer a driving experience as engaging as it is composed. Whether navigating urban streets or conquering winding mountain roads, the ZDX instills confidence in the driver with its stability and agility.

Cutting-Edge Electric Vehicle Technology: The ZDX is not just a luxury SUV; it's a technological display on wheels. Acura's partnership with Google and Bang & Olufsen has resulted in an integrated driving experience all its own. The Google 2 integration seamlessly connects the ZDX to the digital world, offering intuitive navigation, communication, and entertainment features at the driver's fingertips. Meanwhile, the Bang & Olufsen luxury audio system transforms the cabin into a concert hall, delivering immersive sound quality that elevates every journey. I encourage you to tune in to some New Orleans Jazz on your test drive to experience the big band sounds from this stellar sound system.

Revolutionary Sustainability and Charging Solutions: Acura's commitment to sustainability is evident in every ZDX design and engineering aspect. The ZDX's advanced electric drivetrain, coupled with a flexible battery architecture, delivers an anticipated EPA range rating of 325 zero-emission miles, ensuring ample driving range for daily commutes and long-distance travel. But sustainability doesn't end with the ZDX's range; it extends to its charging solutions as well. The Acura Home Electrification (Acura HE) platform offers a seamless process for home charging installation, connecting owners with local installers and Energy Advisors to tailor solutions to their specific needs. On-the-go charging is equally effortless, thanks to the Acura Smartphone App, which grants access to an extensive network of DC Fast Charge stations and streamlines payment processing. Additionally, Acura's collaboration with major automakers on a brand-neutral high-speed charging network aims to revolutionize long-distance travel for ZDX owners, ensuring accessibility and convenience.

Luxurious Interior and Advanced Connectivity Features: Step inside the ZDX, and you'll be greeted by a world of luxury and sophistication. The cabin is crafted with mostly high-end materials and premium finishes, creating an ambiance of refined elegance. But it's not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality and convenience, too. We did notice what we suspect to be cost-cutting efforts, less than premium materials on some of the more obscure surfaces. The ZDX features a modern digital cockpit, complete with a Precision Cockpit Driver Information Cluster and Center Information Screen, providing drivers with essential information at a glance. The integration of Google 2 ensures seamless connectivity, allowing passengers to access their favorite apps and services on the go. And with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, staying connected has never been easier.

Enhanced Safety and Driver Assistance Systems: Acura's commitment to safety is unwavering, and the ZDX is no exception. During our couple of hours drive around New Orleans, we were able to experience autonomous driving using AcuraWatch™, a suite of advanced safety and driver assistance systems designed to enhance driver awareness and mitigate potential hazards. Features like Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Blind Zone Steering Assist provide additional peace of mind on the road, while the new AcuraWatch™ 360+ system introduces Hands-Free Cruise technology, enabling true hands-free driving on compatible roads. AcuraWatch™ 360+ is unlike most radar dynamic cruise control found on many of its competitors. The system identifies traffic patterns and makes independent decisions to change lanes to overtake vehicles when it is safe to do so. The ZDX even returns to the previous speed and lane once the system has successfully overtaken the vehicle ahead. With Acura's dedication to safety, the ZDX sets a new standard for automotive excellence.

The Acura ZDX represents a new level of luxury and technology for electric SUVs, combining unparalleled performance, cutting-edge technology, and unwavering sustainability in a single package. As Acura continues to push the boundaries of automotive innovation, the ZDX stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to excellence and advancement. With its appealing design, exhilarating performance, and advanced features, the ZDX is poised to upset the electric vehicle landscape and pave the way for a greener, more connected future.
