2024 Mustang Mach-E GT Review: The EV That Redefines Performance and Mustang Legacy

When Ford announced that it would be using the iconic "Mustang" name for an all-electric vehicle, many traditionalists, including myself, were deeply concerned. The Mustang, after all, is a symbol of American muscle, a car that roars with power and demands respect on the road. Could an EV really live up to that legacy? Could it truly be worthy of the Mustang name? I had doubts, but my perspective began to change when I had the opportunity to review the Mustang Mach-E in 2021. Each year since its introduction, I've been more impressed by its capabilities and how it continues to evolve.

After my second week-long loan of the Mach-E, a good family friend was taken with the vehicle, and he placed an order. He had to wait almost a year to receive it, as there was a long waitlist for these vehicles back then. Today, however, you can almost choose from a smorgasbord of Mach-Es. The journey from skepticism to admiration for this electric Mustang has been remarkable, and the 2024 Mach-E GT is a prime example of how far this vehicle has come.

With the 2024 Mach-E GT, Ford seems to be gearing up for an electric "Pony Car" war, ready to take on the likes of the Dodge Daytona Scat Pack and the Chevy Blazer. The Mach-E GT now boasts an artificial performance exhaust note pumped into the cabin — a feature that, while not a substitute for the growl of a V8, adds a layer of excitement to the EV driving experience. But will it be enough to compete with the roar of the Daytona Scat Pack? As an owner of the Tesla Model Y Performance, I can vouch for the Mach-E GT's impressive punch off the line. This is no ordinary EV; it's a serious contender in the performance car arena.

Ford has refined everything customers love about the Mustang Mach-E for 2024, resulting in the quickest production Mach-E ever. With a 0-60 mph time of just 3.3 seconds, it's faster than both the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Porsche Macan 4 Electric. It even cracks the quarter mile in 11.8 seconds at 114 mph. These numbers are not just impressive for an EV — they're impressive, period.

The 2024 Mach-E GT with the Performance Upgrade is where the real magic happens. Ford has incorporated innovative powertrain thermal modeling and control algorithms, along with a new in-house developed eMotor, to deliver an additional 100 lb-ft of torque compared to models without the upgrade. This Performance Upgrade, which comes standard on the new Mustang Mach-E Rally and is available for the Mach-E GT, can be selected at purchase or enabled later as a seamless upgrade. This flexibility is a testament to how Ford listens to its customers and adapts to their needs.

In addition to the Performance Upgrade, Ford has standardized several popular performance features previously exclusive to the 2023 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition. These include Ford Performance front seats, the MagneRide® Damping System, and Brembo™ branded front brake calipers. The new rear eMotor, lighter and more efficient, is another example of how Ford continually improves the Mach-E lineup. These enhancements make the 2024 Mach-E GT a formidable player in the electric vehicle market.

Charging has also seen significant improvements. The 2024 Mach-E with the extended range battery now charges almost 20% faster with DC fast charging, allowing drivers to charge from 10% to 80% in just 36.2 minutes— 8.8 minutes faster than previous models. Standard range battery offerings have also been improved, cutting the charging time by 5.7 minutes compared to the Mach-E at its launch. This is crucial for those who, like me, value the convenience of quick charging on long road trips.

Speaking of road trips, the 2024 Mach-E's improved range, thanks to the new eMotor and other enhancements, makes it an even more attractive option for long drives. Ford EV drivers now have access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers through the BlueOval™ Charge Network, North America's largest public charging network. The integration of EV Routing functionality for Google Maps and Apple Maps, along with the new Public Charging app, makes finding charging stations and connecting to chargers easier than ever. The 15.5-inch SYNC® 4A Technology touchscreen, with its updated user experience and new features, further enhances the driving experience. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility remain standard, and the updated Walk Away Lock feature improves security by expanding the zone where it can be used.

One of my standout features is Ford's BlueCruise, which allows for hands-free highway driving. I've used it on my annual summer road trips, making the journey much more enjoyable. I arrive at my destination feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy my time away. BlueCruise is not just a novelty — it's a practical tool that makes every day driving easier and more enjoyable, especially in traffic. It's a feature that sets the Mach-E apart from its competitors.

As I reflect on my initial skepticism about the Mach-E, I can't help but appreciate how far this vehicle has come. Ford has managed to honor the Mustang legacy while pushing the boundaries of what an electric vehicle can be. The 2024 Mach-E GT is not just an EV; it's a Mustang minus the iconic exhaust note. With its performance, technology, and design, it's ready to take on the competition. For anyone still on the fence about whether an EV can capture the spirit of the Mustang, the 2024 Mach-E GT is here to prove that it can — and it does.
