Listeners of The Wake Up With Dee Morning Show recently had the opportunity to hear from Fulton County Commission District 5 candidate Sojourner Marable Grimmett as she joined host Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler for a thoughtful discussion about leadership, service, and her vision for the future of Fulton County.
During the interview, Grimmett shared how more than 25 years of experience across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors have prepared her to serve the residents of District 5. A visionary executive and compassionate servant leader, she has built a distinguished career spanning higher education, local government, affordable senior housing, healthcare, and community advocacy.
Grimmett discussed her role as former Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Peach State Health Plan, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, where she led statewide initiatives designed to increase access to affordable healthcare. Under her leadership, outreach efforts engaged more than 1.4 million Georgians participating in Medicaid, Medicare, and Marketplace health plans, helping connect residents to critical healthcare resources and services.
A proud graduate of Clark Atlanta University and Pennsylvania State University, Grimmett has earned a reputation for bold leadership and innovative problem-solving. During the conversation, she highlighted her commitment to equity and accessibility, including her leadership in advancing the installation of lactation pods at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The initiative helps provide greater support and accommodations for traveling families while serving the needs of more than 108 million passengers annually.
Her accomplishments have earned recognition throughout the region. Grimmett has been named one of the Atlanta Business League's Top 100 Black Women of Influence and has been honored by both Georgia Trend and the Atlanta Business Chronicle as a 40 Under 40 leader. She has also been recognized as an Outstanding Atlanta honoree for her contributions to the community.
Beyond her professional achievements, Grimmett emphasized the importance of community engagement and public service. She currently serves on the Fund Development Committee for the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and was elected by parents to the School Governance Council for Fulton County Schools, where she serves as Chair of Principal Selection for Westlake High School. Her commitment to service also extends to board leadership roles with Mercy Housing Southeast, Family Health Centers of Georgia, and the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA.
Listeners also learned more about Grimmett's personal story. Married to her college sweetheart, Roland, she is the proud mother of two teenage sons, Roland and Joshua. She is a charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's Alpha Beta Omega Omega Chapter, where she chairs the AKA Connections and Social Action Committee. She is also a member of the Greater Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated.
When she's not serving her community, Grimmett enjoys volunteering to support women and children, helping stock food pantries, assisting foster children, visiting art galleries, attending outdoor concerts, and traveling with family and friends. She is also an active member of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.
