Friendship, faith, and intentional communication have been the foundation of Tony and Kimberly Hughes’ 28-year marriage, the couple shared during a recent appearance on The Couple’s Café segment of Let’s Talk About It with the Turners.

The Couple’s Café highlights real-life love stories, offering listeners candid conversations about marriage, growth, and resilience. Both of them raised in Decatur and graduates of DeKalb County schools, joined the show to reflect on their journey together, from their first phone calls to navigating life’s most challenging seasons.

Introduced by a mutual friend, Tony and Kimberly Hughes spent more than a month talking on the phone before their first date. That extended courtship, they said, allowed them to build a strong friendship rooted in shared values, including faith, family, and life purpose. Kimberly noted that even early on, their conversations felt natural and familiar, as if they had known each other for years.

Tony recalled his first in-person impression vividly, describing the moment Kimberly opened the door on their first date. “When I got to the house and she opened the door, I said under my breath, ‘God, let that be her,’” he said. “’Cause that girl is pretty.’” The hosts noted that nearly three decades later, the affection between the two remains evident.

Throughout the interview, the Hugheses emphasized that their marriage has thrived because they genuinely like each other. Tony described their relationship as grounded in laughter, honesty, and mutual respect, while Kimberly highlighted trust, integrity, and shared morals as key pillars.

The couple did not shy away from discussing challenges. Tony spoke openly about the demands of his career in law enforcement and public service, particularly during the early years of their marriage when long hours and emotional exhaustion created strain at home. Kimberly shared how prayer and patience helped her navigate those seasons, noting that supporting her husband spiritually was a constant priority.

Financial hardship also tested their bond. The couple discussed going through bankruptcy, a period Tony described as stressful and humbling. However, he said the experience ultimately strengthened their partnership by reinforcing teamwork, sacrifice, and trust. Kimberly’s willingness to adapt and stand by him during that time affirmed their commitment to one another.

Conflict management was another central theme. Kimberly acknowledged that she had to learn to communicate more directly rather than internalizing frustrations. The couple now checks in regularly, treating their relationship like a “report card” to ensure both partners feel valued and heard.

When asked to offer advice to younger couples, Tony emphasized respect, communication, and maintaining friendship. “Number one advice: remain friends,” he said. “Find reasons to laugh. Always remain respectful.” Kimberly added that personal growth is essential, noting that partners must evolve alongside one another as life stages and needs change.
