In a recent appearance on The Rashad Richey Morning Show, Secretary of the Board for Black Lives Matter Global Network Shalomyah Bowers and Chairwoman of the Board Cicley Gay provided an in-depth look into the movement's rebranding efforts and current initiatives of Black Lives Matter Global Network.

Ms. Gay, who joined Black Lives Matter in 2022, brings over two decades of experience in philanthropy and nonprofit work. She emphasized her personal connection to the cause, being a single mother of three Black sons. She described her role as driven by a deep passion for advancing the welfare of Black communities.

Mr. Bowers, who began his tenure with the organization in 2020, highlighted his commitment to addressing systemic racism and advancing the Black Lives Matter mission. He emphasized the organization’s ongoing efforts to protect and uplift Black lives.

During the interview, Ms. Gay and Mr. Bowers outlined several key rebranding initiatives for Black Lives Matter. The organization is focusing on enhancing transparency and accountability through a new logo, website, and a transparency center to address financial inquiries. Ms. Gay described the rebranding as part of a broader effort to build a robust philanthropic abolitionist organization, supported by six strategic pillars: policy, art, healing justice, frontline organizing, research and education, and culture.

A major highlight of the conversation was the announcement of a $1 million grant from Black Lives Matter to support Elaine Brown and the Black Panther Party Housing Division. The grant will contribute to an $80 million affordable housing project in Oakland, aimed at assisting formerly incarcerated individuals. Ms. Gay and Mr. Bowers both emphasized the historical significance of this initiative, linking it to the Black Panther Party’s legacy.

Mr. Bowers clarified the distinction between the official Black Lives Matter Global Network and other groups using the name. He stressed that the official organization remains committed to advancing Black lives through love, compassion, and unity.

Looking ahead, Ms. Gay and Mr. Bowers discussed their participation in invest Fest 2024, where they will engage in panels and community activities. The event will feature discussions on strategic investments in housing and wellness, reflecting the organization’s commitment to addressing both immediate and long-term needs.

The leaders also discussed Black Lives Matter’s participation in Invest Fest 2024 in Atlanta. The event will feature panels and a booth dedicated to health and wellness, reflecting the organization’s commitment to community engagement and support.
