Alan Spears, Senior Director of Cultural Resources, and the National Parks Conservation Association joined On Point with Juandolyn Stokes to highlight the efforts on behalf of the National Parks Association to honor Emmett Till.
President Biden will designate a monument to Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley on July 25, on what would be his 82nd birthday.
In 2022, President Biden introduced the Anti-Lynching Bill.
According to Spears, The National Parks Association has more than 420 units in the park service, and 40 units share African American history.
“This is a story that never should have happened. It is a part of a shared narrative to give a better understanding of a painful chapter in our history,” said Spears.
Spears says plans for this project have been underway since 2018, and it took some time to decide how to tell this story. He adds, the National Parks Association is interpreting, promoting, and sharing the African American experience.
“This is restorative justice, and a restorative narrative,” said Spears.
