The rise of e-cigarette usage among youth is a pressing issue in the United States. According to a national Youth Tobacco survey by the FDA, one in four young people in the US uses e-cigarettes daily. To address this issue, former special agent in charge of the Washington Field division Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives and current adjunct professor at Georgetown University, Rich Marianos, sheds light on the dangers posed by disposable e-cigarettes manufactured in China by organized crime.
Mr. Marianos spoke on how communities must work together to stop the epidemic of e-cigarette use among youth. Collaborating with store owners, parents, and educators to educate them about the dangers of these devices, as well as holding them accountable for selling to minors, is crucial.
"The problem is that it's challenging to address the import of these illegal devices, and there's no enforcement by the federal government," Mr Marianos stated, highlighting the biggest roadblock to preventing the youth from being preyed upon by organized crime.
Mr. Marianos emphasized the importance of collaborating with law enforcement to disrupt the illegal activities of organized crime involved in the manufacturing and distribution of illegal e-cigarette devices. By working together, we can prevent younger generations from engaging in dangerous and unlawful activities related to e-cigarettes, and establish a safer environment for everyone.
"There is a need for aggressive action to engage the FDA and law enforcement to disrupt the environment where these illegal devices are being sold to youth," Mr Marianos emphasized. "It's time for the federal government to step up and properly impose penalties on distributors and manufacturers of these illegal devices. It's time to fight back, and we need to act now."
