Recently on News & Talk WAOK, former Georgia Lieutenant Governor and Democratic candidate for governor Geoff Duncan outlined his vision for the state. He shared his journey, motivations, and plans to address Georgia’s pressing challenges.
Mr. Duncan shared his journey, noting he lived in seven states before settling in Georgia during high school. A Georgia Tech baseball player drafted by the Marlins, he is now a family man with three children, married to his high school sweetheart. He entered politics to give back, guided by a daily question: “What does love require of me today?”
Having served as Lieutenant Governor as a Republican, Mr. Duncan became disillusioned with the party’s direction during a period marked by a pandemic, civil unrest, and election disputes. Now a Democrat, he explained his decision to run for governor. “When you love your neighbor, that doesn’t have an asterisk mark next to it,” Mr. Duncan said.
He outlined three major issues facing Georgians: an affordability crisis, a healthcare crisis, and the influence of President Donald Trump. Mr. Duncan expressed concern that a Republican victory, by Georgia Governor candidate Burt Jones, could allow external influence over Georgia’s budget, education, and safety policies. He stressed the importance of a Democratic governor to set legislative priorities and focus on those most in need.
Healthcare emerged as a key focus. Mr. Duncan, on a statewide tour, heard from voters worried about losing Medicaid and Affordable Care Act subsidies due to federal budget cuts. He proposed using 10% of Georgia’s $17 billion rainy day fund to expand Medicaid and address healthcare access. “They sit at home and make that horrific decision of deciding whether or not they just stay home and deal with their own medical issues themselves, or they go to the hospital and bankrupt their families because they can't afford to cover the health coverage” he said, highlighting the dire choices many face.
He encouraged Georgians to engage with his campaign at DuncanForGeorgia.com, where they can volunteer, donate, or learn more.
