Atlanta has had two opportunities to show its new-look defense and it’s definitely been a noticeable difference. With five sacks, two interceptions, and no points scored by an opponent in the fourth quarter, the defense with its new additions has made a statement over the first two weeks. But players aren’t the only things new on that side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen is also making his Falcons debut this season and he is starting to turn heads and gain attention

Former Falcons quarterback and current color analyst Dave Archer joined the Morning Shift on a Victory Monday and was asked about Nielsen and assistant defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and what they’ve done to take this defense to the next level. Archer immediately mentions Gray’s work with the defensive backs and their early ability to “do a really good job covering on the back end.” He told The Morning Shift that Gray has done a great job with the secondary with their ability to recognize routes and play man coverage late into games.

Gray's work with the defensive backs, as mentioned by Archer, is crucial for the Falcons' success. Having a secondary that can effectively recognize routes and play man coverage is a significant asset. It allows the defense to disrupt opposing passing attacks and make plays on the ball, as evidenced by its ability to limit points scored late in games.

Nielsen's defense not allowing any points in the fourth quarter is a promising sign. It indicates that the team is well-prepared and able to finish games strongly. Even if the Falcons only recorded one sack in a game, consistent pressure on the quarterback can disrupt an opponent's passing game and force mistakes, as seen with Jordan Love's 0-6 stat line in the fourth quarter.

The addition of linebacker Nathan Landman stepping up in the absence of Troy Anderson is also a positive development. Having depth and versatility in the defense is essential for a successful season.
